INFORMATIVE ESSAY

Writing the report: [note: YOU MUST TURN THE PAPER IN WITH THE TURN-IT-IN REPORT—details to follow] DUE DATES ARE ON THE SYLLABUS! DO NOT FORGET THAT YOU ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO COMPLETE A DRAFT BY APR. 20.

Write an investigative report about one of the following topics:

1. Report on adolescent Americans’ attitudes toward body image. Consider how attitudes differ and why. Consider causes and effects of these attitudes. In your conclusion, recommend possible solutions to the problems you identify.
2. Report on types of illegal drugs used by adolescent Americans, availability of these drugs, and their effects. In your conclusion, recommend possible solutions to the problems you identify.
3. The positive results of immigration to America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries versus contemporary attitudes toward immigration, many of which are anti-immigration. In your conclusion, recommend possible solutions to the problems you identify.
4. A report on a recent trend, event, discovery, new marketing approach, or other element of your field of study. In your conclusion, summarize the effects of the topic on the field.
5. A topic of your choice.

If you choose to develop your own topic from questions 4 or 5, I must approve the topic. If you do not get my approval, I will not accept the paper.

Remember that each topic requires substantial research. You may not rely on opinion; you need facts and authoritative support because in a report, you want to find out what is currently known about the topic and present it in an objective manner. In the conclusion to this report, you will present a carefully reasoned persuasive discussion suggesting solutions to the problems identified in the report.

Use a variety of developmental approaches, including illustration and example, narration, definition, division/classification, cause/effect, to develop your report.

The sections will consist of an introduction, multi-sections developing the topic, and a conclusion presenting your carefully supported recommendations for a solution. Remember, if there is no solution (and none of the topics have one easy solution), suggest several possibilities or compromises. You may use images, but cite them correctly.

Take the following steps to write your report:

1. Consider what your readers want to know about the topic
2. Develop an objective stance
3. Compose a thesis that summarizes your knowledge of the topic and suggests your solution/s
4. Provide context in your introduction
5. Organize your report by classifying and dividing information
6. Illustrate key ideas with examples
7. Define specialized terms; spell out unfamiliar abbreviations
8. Conclude by suggesting a solution or several solutions to the problems you have identified.

You must use APA style, including a title page, the report, and the References page. If you use images, the image caption page follows the References. The report will be three body pages long, plus have a title page, References page, and image captions page, if you use them. You need at least 4 sources: one book, one newspaper article, and two other sources of your choice, including an interview, if you so wish. You may not use the first person (“I”) or you/your in your paper; you may not use Wikipedia as a source, only Galileo sources unless I give you permission to do otherwise.
